Magnetic rod is an essential part of any magnetic grate. Using several magnetic rods, a simple, one-story magnetic grate may be created. Magnetic rod consists of a closed, stainless steel pipe and magnetic core. On one end, the pipe is equipped with an inner screw for an attachment to the grate frame.

Magnetic rods – main benefits

Good magnetic output of separate rods due to strong NdFeB magnets

Minimum magnetic output losses due to a thin, worked pipe wall.

The product has flexible dimensions. MAGSY manufactures magnetic rods according to dimensions given by customers.

Non-comfortable system of magnetic rods cleaning from Fe impurities is a disadvantage. The cores cannot be pulled out.Pipe wall is machined to as low as possible thickness, in order to minimize the magnetic force losses. Magnetic core consists of cylindrical NdFeB magnets and pole extensions.

Standard magnetic parameters of MAGSY rods are on the three levels.

As a standard, MAGSY manufactures MR magnetic rods in two diameters and several lengths.

MR with the diameter of 25 mm: the lengths are 150; 200; 250; 300; 350; 450 and 500 mm

MR with the diameter of 30 mm: the length is 250 mm.

Magnetic rod cleaning is always manual. Wipe Fe impurities off from the rod surface by hand.

Customers prefer magnetic rods mainly in certain grate dimensions. Own grate is made by customers by themselves.

Magnetic rods are made-on-measure by MAGSY in various lengths and flexibly, based on a submission.

Magnetic rods – industrial utilization areas

1. Use in dry materials

In fact, MR magnetic rods, as parts of magnetic grates, may be used in all industrial areas where the medium to be cleaned is represented by a dry, homogeneous material, or dry material mixtures in very small or fine fractions. Good loose parameters need to be provided at all times.

Grates made of magnetic rods are not suitable for using with abrasive media because the pipe wall is machined to a very small thickness so the tear and wear of the pipe may come very quickly. This deals also with materials with adhesive behavior. Rod-made grates are usually stationary, i.e. the grates may become clogged due to the material “arching”.

Utilization areas:

Agricultural product industry, feeding mixtures, especially food industry

Building matter industry, ceramics and porcelain industry, chemical industry

Polymer and rubber processing industry and other industrial areas where dry, loose bulk material is processed.

WARNING
Due to the facts that separate rods are supplied per order and the customer creates his magnetic grate by himself, the question of so called “fall labyrinth” is not solved on the MAGSY side. This indispensable condition of a proper separation efficiency is solved and covered by the MAGSY company only in cases of separators belonging completely to the company portfolio (MST, etc.).

Directly for a sake of catching, magnetic separation of even the finest metal magnetic impurities in liquids, there were developed these magnetic rods, installed in a special holder called generally „Magnetic separators to be used in textile filters“. In case of their installation, you increase your chance to catch these impurities to the maximum level, saving thus costs related to very frequent textile material filter replacement operations. Our internal study confirmed that almost 45% of impurities that need to be caught, are of a magnetic nature, and their size is often such small (below 1.5 µm – with a “slimy mud” characteristics) that the filters characterized by limited filtration eye dimensions are without a chance to catch them.

Utilization area

Chemical industry

Food industry

Pharmaceutical industry

Mechanical engineering

Ceramics production

…and many other industrial areas where metal magnetic impurities need to be caught from liquids, or similar liquid-like matters transported using filtration assemblies

Magnetic solution

In case of magnetic rods to be used with textile filters, MAGSY offers several magnetic induction / magnetic force levels. According to a type of the material flowing through the magnetic rods, suitable magnetic force should be selected. Our experts will recommend you the force level appropriate, in a coordination with your production environment and technological possibilities knowledge.

In some separation applications, deeper magnetic circuits must be chosen in a way that metal impurities are partly attracted even from a longer distance.

After that, they have to be firmly caught which applies to magnetic separation cases where larger ferromagnetic impurities are dealt with mainly. On contrary to that, in some applications, the magnetic circuit depth should be reduced as much as possible, in a way that the “clamping” force is the highest as it could be so even the finest ferromagnetic impurities (having a slimy mud characteristics) are caught and held reliably. This all must be provided in a combination with a very thin wall separating the liquid from the magnets; in most cases, the thickness ranges between 0.5 and 0.7 mm based on the magnetic force selected and magnetic separation quality requirements.

More about the magnetic induction measurement and our magnetic rod parameters

However, in any case, as close as possible metal impurity contact with the magnetic rod in question must be provided. In case of textile filters, there is usually hard to find this out so the contact with magnetic rods is compensated by a longer time for which the liquid remains in the candle filter. Amongst others, this impacts to an increase of technological times. Because of that, our company also offers a possibility of the magnetic separation improvement, by an installation of two magnetic rods into a specially modified magnetic rod holder. Due to that, the time to be spent in the filtration unit does not have to be extended so the probability of ferromagnetic impurity catching becomes increased just due to the quantitative stiffening of the magnetic rods in the holder. For a sake of completeness, you may download a graph where it is displayed how the magnetic induction and tear-off force values decrease as a function on a distance from the magnetic rod. This confirms the fact that more rods installed increase the probability of ferromagnetic impurity catching.

Technical solution

Magnetic rods are installed in specially designed holders developed directly for most of the filter dimensions, capable of containing one or two magnetic rods. In a comfortable and ergonomic way, the holder fits to the groove located in the candle-like filter, so during its installation, the maximum tightness of the entire system is guaranteed. The number of rods to be installed is given by the production technology and customer requirements regarding the outgoing magnetic separation – see the section above.

We manufacture magnets for textile filters in the design featuring one or two magnetic rods:

Magnet for textile filters, with one rod

Magnet for textile filters, with a single rod (MTF – 1) – it consists of one magnetic rod + stainless-steel carrier for that rod

Magnet for textile filters, with two rods

Magnet for textile filters, with two rods (MTF – 2) – it consists of two magnetic rods + stainless steel carrier for the two rods

Magnetic rods

Final surface treatment uses polishing, with the final surface guaranteed for the polish level of Ra = 0.02µm – in order to achieve as smooth as possible surface by the reason of prevention of creating micro-fissures where impurities may accumulate, making thus unwanted „crusting“ effect. This 100 % smooth surface also guaranties very comfortable and trouble-less cleaning.

In the lower magnetic rod part, there is situated a pin-like projection the location of which is comfortable and precise – magnetic rod is installed into its holder.

In the upper part, an embedment is designed providing perfect securing of the magnetic rod during its installation into the auxiliary holder.

A specially designed, so called open magnetic circuit, with a shorter or longer arch between the pole extensions, guarantees a maximum magnetic – tear-off force corresponding to your needs.

The material is a standard stainless steel 1.4301 / AISI 304. By request, if needed in environments characterized by aggressive pH values, we can supply the product as made of the 1.4404 / AISI 316 material. All materials are in the quality corresponding to respective EU norms and possessing respective certifications.

As a standard, magnetic rod temperature resistance is up to 80 ˚C. By your request, we can prepare your magnetic rod also for using at higher temperatures, i.e. up to 200 ˚C (in case of even higher temperatures, please take into account decreasing of our standard magnetic parameters by ca 10 – 20 %, as depending on the thermal resistance chosen).

Magnetic rod holder

Holder surface treatment uses ceramic ball blasting – this results into a unique, matt surface. In general, the design is robust, firm, and it enables less careful treatment as well.

In the upper part of the magnetic rod holder, small telescopic piston is situated. The item provides a fixed magnetic rod securing in the holder and, also, its very comfortable removal upon cleaning.
Perforated, lightweight stainless steel partition is very important part of the magnetic rod holder. Especially by safety reasons, the partition serves to provision of perfect separation of the magnetic rods (in case of cleaning) that applies to the variant including two rods installed.Magnetic rods are very strong and they may NEVER become connected with each other (please, pay an extraordinary attention to their handling – if interconnected, they can be separated again only with a difficulty). In addition to that, your fingers may become injured too.

Magnetic rod cleaning

After the magnetic rod has been removed (in case you afford the arrangement including two magnetic rods, please remove the rod in question from the holder in its axis direction. In respect to the fact that the magnetic circuit is ended to a sufficient extent before the rod end on both of the magnetic rod sides, metal impurities fall out very easily. However, it is very important to carry this process out using a personal protective equipment, in order to prevent hand injuries by sharp metal impurities that can also be collected on the rods.

Ask us – we will advise you!

Made-to-measure production is our strength.

As an improved option of telescopic magnetic grates, covered grates were introduced that could be used for both the magnetic separation from loose materials, and from loose mixtures. Due to their design, they may be used especially in humid environments where they are very popular. Mostly these liquids with a low density, e.g. various de-greasing and cooling emulsions, lubricants, oils, etc. The innovation consists in a sophisticated cleaning process already known in e.g. magnetic separators, flow-type ones, MF due to which there is guaranteed a maximum magnetic core resistance in relation to surrounding humidity. By an action of a very strong magnetic field, even very fine metal impurities are caught, even in order of microns.

Utilization area in industrial operations:

Separation aimed at technological protection in operations

Installation of the covered magnetic grate may prevent damaging of subsequent technological units where there are caught magnetic metal impurities on the covered magnetic grate that are associated with the risk of damaging such technologies. For example, cooling channels in cooled tools are devalued in cases when metal impurities enter such channels. Sometimes the metal impurities are as small as they start depositing in a channel, and the process continues until the channel becomes fully clogged. Sieves and filtration clothes may be ineffective in some cases because these are metal impurities with typical size of microns; the impurities are reliably caught by the separator whereas they pass through the sieves and filtration clothes.

Separation aimed at product cleanliness

A presence of metal impurities in cooling emulsions may cause decreasing of the machining quality (scratches, notches). Covered grate installation leads to a significant increase of the machining quality so the surface quality of the final, machined product is much increased within a very short time.

In other production areas such as ceramics industry, final product quality may be worsened due to a presence of black dots that are sometimes so fine that they could not be caught using filtration clothes, so they are manifested as late as on the magnetic separator. The advantage of this covered magnetic grate type consists mainly in a possibility of situating it into various inflow and flowing gutters that is enabled by their significant resistance against humidity.

Operational costs saving

Similarly to the final product quality, covered grate installation impacts also onto a significant reduction of operational costs in relation to machining tool grinding. Based on the operational tests carried out by multi-national companies spending a lot of money on grinding every month, the savings were amounted in a demonstrable way, by a monthly costs reduction by tens of %.

Technical solution

Magnetic pipes of a covered magnetic grate are mostly designed into a “grate-type” assembly and, as a standard, they are manufactured using 1.4301 / AISI 304 stainless steel. In case the covered magnetic grate installation has to be applied in an aggressive material, we can supply you the option manufactured using 1.4404 / AISI 316L material.

Due to a very thin covering pipe wall, machined down to the thickness of 0.6 mm, we reach a very high magnetic force on its surface. As a standard covering pipe diameter, even 31.0 mm is considered. As a standard, magnetic pipe load-bearing elements are manufactured using flat materials with the thickness of 4 mm. Covering extensions are standardly available in the thicknesses ranging from 2 to 3 mm.

Today we are only using very strong permanent neodymium (NdFeB) magnets providing – due to their unique force that is the highest one amongst permanent magnets – reliable catching and – mainly – subsequent holding (fixation) of metal impurities on a covering pipe. Ferrite magnets used previously are almost no more used in this type of separation.

These permanent neodymium magnets are installed into a covering, stainless steel pipe. As a standard, today we offer 6 magnetic induction levels, i.e. the levels of the magnetic force, as a function of a type of environment into which the covered grate is situated. Some levels are characterized by a higher gripping force whereas others are typical with higher magnetic field values – find out more about the magnetic parameters.

Grate system

Stationary covering stainless steel pipes, pull-out magnetic cores

Grate and covering pipe material

As a standard: stainless steel 1.4301 / AISI 304.

As an option: stainless steel 1.4404 / AISI 316L

All materials are certified in a quality corresponding to respective EU norms.

Surface treatments

Grate frame: machine-blasted using a ceramics compound

Outer pipe surface: machine-blasted, or polished as an option

Engineering workmanship

All engineering workmanship operations are carried out using machines belonging to own MAGSY CZ manufacturing equipment, using own MAGSY CZ engineering technology.

Component welds

They are performed according to requirements of technological standards valid in stainless steel material welding. Demanding outgoing weld quality inspection guarantees a high outgoing product quality.

Cleaning system

Magnetic cores are permanently secured and protected against humidity. This applies even during cleaning of these covered magnetic grates.

After releasing the safety clip, using the handrail, pull the magnetic cores up to the upper part of the covered magnetic separator

This way the lower part – stainless steel covering pipes – become demagnetized. Metals fall out (due to natural characteristics of metal impurities being caught by these types of magnetic separators). They even assume characteristics of a slimy mud – in most cases, these impurities must be rinsed with water.

Push the cores back to the stainless steel pipes; this way, they become magnetized again.
