Magnetic separators are a key element in industries that effectively helps to separate magnetic and metallic particles from various materials.

One of the main reasons magnetic separators are essential equipment in industries is their ability to separate unwanted impurities from materials. In these areas, it is often the case that metallic or magnetic particles appear at some stage during the production process, resulting in a deterioration of the quality of the final product. They also ensure that there is no wear and tear and damage to production equipment. This extends the life and reliability of the equipment and reduces repair costs.

What is the MB magnetic drum separator?

A magnetic drum (MB) separator uses a strong magnetic field to capture and separate magnetic contaminants from the materials that pass through it.

The magnetic drum separator consists of a robust cylindrical body. This cylinder or drum is made of non-metallic material and tends to be resistant to high temperatures and corrosion.

A strong magnet is installed inside the cylinder to generate a strong magnetic field.

Then the material or raw material is brought to the surface of the magnetic drum separator. This rotates and as it rotates, a magnetic field is generated which is able to very efficiently capture magnetically sensitive particles on its shell, thus separating them from the material. The trapped particles are firmly bonded to the surface of the separator, while the remaining material continues on into the production process.

The drum separator is then manually or automatically cleaned and the impurities are removed.

Advantages of the magnetic drum separator

The magnetic drum separator is very effective in separating magnetically sensitive particles, resulting in high quality end products. This type of separator also does not require heavy maintenance or cleaning. Magnetic drum separators are suitable for a wide variety of manufacturing and industrial applications such as mining, metallurgy, recycling, chemical and food processing.

Cleaning the magnetic drum separator

During operation, metallic contaminants adhere to the surface of the separator and must be removed periodically to maintain the efficiency of the separator.

1. Manual cleaning

This method is most commonly used especially for smaller drum separators. Special tools, such as a scraper, are used. This procedure is easy, but requires an authorised person to take care of the cleaning on a regular basis.

2. Automatic cleaning

For production with continuous operation, then a free drum separator with automatic cleaning is ideal. A programmed mechanism automatically removes and collects them in a separate container, which then just needs to be taken out once in a while. Incidentally, you can see this in our animation.

The material, which includes the red marked iron particles, enters the MBZ magnetic box separator through the opening at the top of the separator.

These fall onto a rotating magnetic drum located in the cabinet structure. On impact, the metal particles are trapped on the rotating magnetic drum.

When the material together with the metal particles reaches the bottom phase, the material falls off separately into the left chamber and the particles continue on. Only in the next rotation phase do they also separate from the drum, but fall off into a separate and distinct chamber.

There is a large variety of magnetic separators on the market, but if you specialise in production where you work with liquid mixtures and other liquids, you should get an MF magnetic separator; in other words, a flow separator in the form of a magnetic filter with manual cleaning. These are the best and most popular for this type of production.

The liquid medium to be separated is either pushed through the separator by pressure in a pipeline, or the medium flows through the separator, free flowing without pressure. This type of separator can be installed in either the vertical or horizontal position of the flow pipeline. Our company uses sealed magnetic cores in the cover tubes, which guarantee they are protected against the negative effects of aggressive environments.

These separators are typically found in industries such as machinery, ceramic, chemical, and food processing. Food industry – liquid products and semi-products.

Last but not least, it depends on the purpose for which you want to use the flow separator. It may be used to prevent ferromagnetic particles from damaging the production technology. In this case, the separator is placed during media processing, upstream of the process units that need to be protected. It may be used to ensure the purity of the final product. In this case, the separator is placed at the very end, but it is also usually placed at several points during the production process.

MF separators are made of 1.4301 stainless steel as standard. Our company is also able to produce separators for acidic or aggressive environments, from 1.4404 or 1.4571 materials, according to the customer’s needs.

Principle of cleaning the MF magnetic separator manually

The separator consists of a body, components and connecting elements. The body is shaped like a pipe and is firmly attached to the pipeline by means of connecting elements. The actual separation takes place in the separator’s body. Its size reflects many factors that are specific to the production in which the separator will be used. It must be ensured that there is no reduction in the flow rate of the separated medium or change in the operating conditions.

Are separators really worth using? Definitely yes, here’s why.

An unnamed wheel bearing company used an automatic flow separator. This machine extended the life of the machining emulsion by a full 32%.

The automatic flow separator in a company producing springs removed 3 kilograms of iron particles in 4 days (0.75 kg per day) and completely cleaned the pipeline.

In a specific application in the automotive industry, a manual magnetic separator in machinery production removes 800 g of iron particles in 12 hours.

If we talk about a magnetic separator with sliding grates, we have to imagine a kind of case containing technology that can separate impurities from dry homogeneous mixtures and materials in pipeline systems in non-continuous operations.

At the heart of the technology inside the case are magnetic sliding grates. This case is then installed in the pipeline system, preferably in a vertical position, so that the bulk material can be easily moved through the entire separation mechanism. The magnetic grates inside the case can detect and attract magnetic impurities within the mixture of the fed material.

Where is this separator useful?

Food industry

Agrarian industry

Chemical industry

Construction industry – production of building materials, ceramics and porcelain

Manufacturing industry (plastics and rubber processing, recycling and waste sorting)

Main advantages of the separator

Removal of impurities during operation to protect production technology

Thanks to the separator, ferromagnetic impurities are removed right at the beginning or during the production process, before the material enters the technology, thus preventing damage to it

The grate is made up of magnetic rods that are fitted with powerful neodymium magnets that guarantee maximum separation

Capable of capturing impurities from 1 mm in size

Separation for maximum product purity:

For maximum purity of the final product, the separator is placed at the very end of the production process

The product itself is thus cleaned of ferromagnetic impurities

Purity is ensured by the powerful neodymium magnets that are part of the magnetic rods

The magnetic rods capture very fine impurities (from 1.0 µm)

We are a company that specialises mainly in the production of magnetic separators, but we are also one of the leading manufacturers of sorting lines. Our years of experience enable us to provide a complete solution to meet our clients’ requirements. For example, we can provide you with the design, construction and building of separation lines, for both magnetic and non-magnetic materials.

We are able to meet our customers’ requirements from A to Z, exactly according to their requirements. The design depends on the specific application, type and total amount of material that will pass through the separation line and other factors that we will specify together during consultations.

Example of a separation line for both magnetic and non-magnetic materials

Animation description

Our separation line consists of three separate parts. The first part separates iron, where magnetic particles are captured through a magnetic drum. Afterwards, the remaining particles fall onto a conveyor belt, where stainless steel particles are separated by a magnetic roller. And the last part of the separation line separates the remaining non-magnetic metal particles, using an Eddy Current induction separator, such as aluminium or copper parts which are left behind. All the separated particles fall into a special container that is designed for them.

Iron separation

The magnetic drum is designed for the separation of metallic magnetic parts from loose mixtures (non-ferrous metals, plastic granulate, etc.). As a rule, it is placed under the hopper of the machine or behind the conveyor belt, from which non-separated material falls onto the magnetic drum, which carries out the actual separation. A great benefit of the magnetic drum is that it is not part of the conveyor belt, so it can be used in numerous ways.

The magnetic drum consists of an outer stainless steel rotating shell with a sleeve and magnetic core fitted with ferrite magnets or also very powerful neodymium magnets NdFeB.

You can use the magnetic drum ideally to protect equipment from damage by metal particles.

Stainless steel separation

The magnetic roller is a separator featuring automatic cleaning without the need for human operators. In this case, the magnetic roller will help you separate bigger stainless steel impurities which have already been processed in some way in the previous production step, preferably crushed.

The magnetic roller is most often used to replace the existing conveyor end roller. The roller is, therefore, manufactured in such a way that it can replace the existing roller, and no conveyor modification is required.

Separation of non-magnetic metals (aluminium, copper, etc.)

From time to time, it is necessary to separate non-magnetic metals from non-metallic materials (plastic, paper, wood, glass, etc.) in production. The right way to do this is by using a so-calledinduction separator. The Eddy Current, as it is otherwise called, is the best way to accomplish separation tasks that cannot be achieved with a conventional magnetic separator.

The induction separator uses the principle of magnetic eddy currents (so-called Foucault currents). The magnetic roller is always incorporated into the induction magnetic roller and conveyor assembly. The roller features powerful neodymium magnets. The magnetic roller rotates at a high speed, allowing the induction separator to temporarily charge non-magnetic metals with the same magnetic charge as the induction roller. Therefore, the metals are ”thrown” away from the magnetic roller by the eddy currents and then drop off.

Our Eddy Current unit features a sophisticated separator. The separator can be easily adjusted in two directions, making it simple to effectively separate non-metallic materials from non-magnetic metals, thus ensuring high-quality separation.

We manufacture customised separation lines
